Aaron Vale Is the Victor Again at HITS Culpeper In the $50,000 Panacur Powerpac Grand Prix

RHINEBECK, NY (June 20, 2000)--Eighteen riders tried unsuccessfully to clear Course Designer Anthony D`Ambrosio`s $50,000 Panacur Powerpac Grand Prix Course at the Loudon Memorial Horse Show on June 18 before Aaron Vale turned in a clean trip on his new young horse, Elan Florestan. In a field of 34 riders, Vale produced another clear round on Endeavor. Six riders joined Vale in the jump-off but no one could catch Elan Florestan who was first to go and set the pace with a clear round at 40.313 in the 47-second time allowed. Vale took home $15,000 for owners Elan Farms of Newark, New Jersey. Endeavor had a rail down and placed third for Sagamore Farm of Oyster Bay, New York. Second place and $11,000 went to Ian Silitch of Sperryville, Virginia, on his own Cable. Silitch and Cable also won the $15,000 Open Jumper Mini Prix on Friday, June 16.
Based at his Millstream Farm in Rembert, South Carolina, Vale has won the first two out of the seven Grand Prix events scheduled from April to October at HITS Commonwealth Park in Culpeper, Virginia. At the first HITS Culpeper show of the 2000 season, the Commonwealth National in April, Vale won the $50,000 EMO Grand Prix aboard Millstream`s Bugs Bunny on Easter Sunday.

Elan Florestan is an eight-year old 17-hand gray German-bred horse that Vale has been working with for three months. Vale took over the ride from Olympic Medallist Tim Grubb. "I`ve been working on building Elan`s confidence," said Vale. "Elan is young and unsure so he gets nervous and scared. This is his first Grand Prix win. It`s a big step for him. He`s a handsome, big horse and young for a jumper. He always has this look in his eye as if he`s asking me for moral support. Tim Grubb has been a big help--he`s given me lots of advice. I`ve worked on the water jump to build Elan`s confidence in his abilities. And I keep him in the ring often--the more work, the better."

Course Designer D`Ambrosio, a Grand Prix rider and the current North American record holder for the puissance, has been designing courses for four years. His Round One included 13 jumps with a double at fence four, another at fence 12, followed by another double at 13 with time allowed at 77 seconds. Two riders withdrew on course and one was eliminated in a fall. "The course was a lot trickier than everyone thought," said Vale who rode three horses in the Grand Prix including Garcon owned by Millstream and Mr. and Mrs. Don Stewart Jr. of Ocala, Florida. Garcon was Vale`s first entry, but had rails down for eight faults.

"For the jump-off, I thought Endeavor had a better chance," Vale said. "But Elan had a good gallop and made tight turns. He had to cover a lot of ground. He`s a big horse and moves quick. After Elan went clean, I watched a few other rounds and I thought I was going to finish third or fourth. Endeavor was the last horse in the jump-off and I knew I had already won. Endeavor is a seasoned horse but he had a pole down and ended up third."

Though he`s having a winning streak, Vale says he is not aiming for Sydney. "I`ll skip the Olympic Trials this year. Elan is too young and the other horses are past their prime for Olympic competition. I`m going to concentrate on the Grand Prix." Vale`s schedule includes HITS Culpeper and HITS Catskills shows as well as indoors at Roanoke and the Gold Cup.

Presenting the awards for the $50,000 Panacur Powerpac Grand Prix were representatives from Intervet, the manufacturers of Panacur Powerpac: Larry Ahlman, Eastern Regional Sales Manager, Ralph Massimei, Territory Manager, and Ron Wogan, Territory Manager. Panacur Powerpac, a new deworming product, is the presenting sponsor for all seven horse shows this summer at HITS Commonwealth Park.

The Showday National, July 5-9, is the next horse show in the HITS Culpeper series. The featured event is the $50,000 Rio Vista Grand Prix on Sunday, July 9.
